Closing of the 9th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in Fez

Closing, on November 23, 2022 in Fez, of the 9th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) after two days of exchanges and dialogue.

In an address on this occasion, the High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, thanked HM King Mohammed VI for His vision and His support, which made the Fez Forum a success at all levels.

Mr. Moratinos also congratulated the local authorities and the Moroccan government for the successful organization of this international event in record time.

"In only 55 days, we were able to organize this event which was marked by three plenary sessions, eight group meetings, two side events and a fantastic youth forum," said the UN official.

Moratinos gave an appointment to the participants in the next edition of the Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations, scheduled for 2024 in Portugal.

For her part, the Director of Cooperation and Cultural Action at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Ms. Nadia El Hnot, said that the choice of the city of Fez embodies the spirit and essence of the Alliance of Civilizations.

"The will was to focus on youth and Africa in the context of peace and living together," she noted, stressing that this edition has reaffirmed the political commitments related to the 5 pillars of action: youth, media, education, migration and women as drivers of peace.

This forum, which was organized under the theme "Towards an Alliance of Peace: Living Together as One Humanity" was marked by the message sent by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the participants in this Global Forum.

In this message, His Majesty the King affirmed that the values and ideals of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations that it defends and the model it calls for are the same system of values and ideals adopted by Morocco and the same model it adopts.

Co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, this event is attended by many prominent figures including the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres.

This international event aims to promote dialogue and cooperation between different communities, cultures and civilizations, and to build bridges that unite populations and people beyond their cultural or religious differences, developing a series of concrete actions aimed at conflict prevention and peace building.

More than 1,500 participants took part in this event, distributed among official delegations belonging to a group of countries and organizations of friends of the coalition, civil society, actors in the field of work of the coalition, academics, youth and students.

Many foreign ministers, diplomats, religious leaders, and personalities from the worlds of art and sports attended the forum, which was well covered by the media.

The 9th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations culminated in the adoption of the Fez Declaration, which called for full implementation of what was agreed upon. Thanks to this declaration, governments, with the support of civil society, can overcome challenges and advance towards the goals of coexistence in order to achieve sustainable development.
