The re-election of the Moroccan candidate to this Sub-Committee is a new achievement by the Kingdom of Morocco at the UN Human Rights bodies, especially as it constitutes an undeniable recognition of the irreversible commitment of our country on the way of upholding the rule of law, democracy and respect and protection of all human rights in their indivisibility, in accordance with the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, May God Assist Him.
This re-election also reinforces Morocco's presence in UN human rights bodies as it constitutes the fourth success in a row within a month for the candidatures of the Kingdom of Morocco to the human rights bodies of the United Nations.
This new diplomatic success is the fruit of a large-scale diplomatic promotional campaign led by the MoFA in favor of this candidacy with States Parties to the optional protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).
Mr. OUNNIR, a university professor and researcher in the fields of Private Law, International Criminal Law and Humanitarian Law, held, during his first term at the SPT, the positions of Vice-President, rapporteur and case law officer within this UN body.
The Kingdom of Morocco, a member of the OPCAT since 2014, has made significant efforts in the fight against torture, reflected in the establishment of a legal and institutional framework, the commitment of a range of reforms to strengthen the Prevention of ill-treatment and the protection of persons deprived of their liberty, as well as the establishment of a national mechanism for the Prevention of torture (MNPT), as provided for by the OPCAT.
