President of Chilean Senate Praises Moroccan Autonomy Initiative
"We have been supporting for two years the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco to end the conflict over the Sahara," Quintana said during a meeting with the wali of the region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, governor of the province of Laayoune, Abdeslam Bekrate.
In addition, the president of the Chilean Senate commended the excellent level of the "solid and long-standing political and institutional relations" between the two friendly countries.
For his part, senator Guido Girardi, president of the Chilean-Moroccan friendship group in the Chilean Senate, stressed that the majority of Chile's political parties, from left to right, support the Kingdom's position on the Sahara issue.
He also lauded Morocco's leadership and important role in Africa, while advocating for the strengthening of relations between the two countries at all levels.
"Establishing an alliance between Chile and Morocco, a country with a strong presence in Africa, is a very important issue," he stressed, emphasizing the need to promote bilateral partnership in the economic, trade, cultural and scientific fields to meet the challenges of globalization and climate change.
In this regard, he stressed the importance of strengthening the exchange of expertise in the field of renewable energy production, particularly solar energy, given that both countries are leaders in this sector.
In January 2018, the Senate of the Republic of Chile adopted a resolution supporting the Moroccan autonomy initiative, following the approval of a similar resolution by the Chilean Chamber of Deputies.
Under this resolution, the Chilean Senate welcomed the pre-eminence of the Sahara autonomy initiative presented by Morocco, which was hailed by the United Nations and the entire international community as a serious and credible initiative for the final settlement of this regional dispute.
