Statement
Tuesday 12 December 2023
Germany reiterated its position on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, considering "the autonomy plan presented in 2007 as a serious and credible effort by Morocco and as a good basis for a solution accepted by both parties," as expressed in the Joint Declaration of August 25, 2022.
This position was reaffirmed during the 50th session of intergovernmental negotiations on Morocco-Germany cooperation, held in Rabat on December 7 and 8.
The Joint Declaration of August 25, 2022, was adopted following a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Baerbock.
In the same declaration, the German side emphasized the exclusive role of the UN in the political process and reiterated its support for UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which acknowledged the role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, and compromise-based political solution.
