Statement: Morocco elected to UN Human Rights Council for a third term
This is the third term of Morocco in the Council, based in Geneva. Indeed, Morocco had served between 2006-2008 as a founding member holding the position of Vice President and then as a member of the Council between 2014 and 2016.
This election is first of all a mark of confidence of the international community towards the Kingdom of Morocco. It also attests to the credibility of the institutional and legislative reforms launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, for the protection, respect and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Finally, it is a recognition of the role played by Morocco, a founding member of the Human Rights Council, for its constant action to strengthen dialogue and international cooperation for the promotion of human rights, within the framework of the High Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, irreversible for a multilateralism based on solidarity and pragmatism.
The Kingdom's commitments in favor of human rights have always constituted a continuum, at the international level, of the national dynamics in favor of democracy, the rule of law and human rights. They are a testimony to Morocco's unwavering commitment, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, to the universal values of equality between men and women, pluralism, moderation, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence and dialogue between civilizations, cultures and religions.
Morocco's election to the Human Rights Council, a prestigious UN body, is also the culmination of the Kingdom's constructive efforts to strengthen the Human Rights Council, in particular its leading role in the establishment of its key mechanism, the Universal Periodic Review.
Indeed, the Kingdom has always contributed substantially to the work of the Human Rights Council since its creation, notably through the presentation and sponsorship of numerous resolutions and decisions. In the spirit of solidarity that characterizes the Kingdom's action within the Council, Morocco is also among the major contributors to the Universal Periodic Review mechanism fund for technical assistance to developing countries.
Through this third mandate at the Human Rights Council, the Kingdom of Morocco will work to strengthen international solidarity in the promotion of human rights, the protection of fundamental freedoms, the awareness of issues related to climate change and human rights, and the promotion of equality between men and women and the fight against discrimination and all forms of inequality, as well as the defense of migrants' rights.
The Human Rights Council, established by UN General Assembly resolution 60/251, is the UN body responsible for promoting universal respect for and observance of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of any kind and in a fair and equal manner.
Its forty-seven members are elected individually by the 193 UN member states, according to an equitable geographical distribution.
