In a meeting by video teleconference with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad Mr. Nasser Bourita, Secretary of State Mr. Mike Pompeo also thanked Morocco for its leadership on critically important public health efforts in Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic, said Spokesperson of the US department of state Morgan Ortagus in a statement. 

The two officials discussed opportunities to increase bilateral cooperation to create a more secure and prosperous region, said Ortagus, noting that Secretary Pompeo encouraged the Moroccan government to continue to support UN-facilitated efforts to resolve the conflict in Libya and end its destabilizing effects throughout the region.

The Secretary highlighted Moroccan efforts in the shared fight against terrorism and the role Morocco plays in preventing violent extremism. Additionally, Secretary Pompeo commended Moroccan partnership in preserving the cultural heritage of religious minorities, interfaith dialogue, and religious tolerance, she added.

Mr. Bourita and Mr. Pompeo, co-chaired, Tuesday via teleconference, the signing ceremony of a bilateral agreement on enhanced privileges and immunities extended to the counselor corps.

Initialed by the US Ambassador in Rabat, Mr. David Fischer, and Mr. Anas Khales, Ambassador, Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, the agreement aims to ensure the efficient functioning of the diplomatic representations of the two parties. 

The provisions of this agreement state that each party shall grant the consular officials of the other party, and their families, the privileges and immunities provided for in Articles 29 to 36 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
