King Felipe VI of Spain Highlights 'Enormous Potential' for Cooperation with Morocco
"The State visit we made to Morocco in February 2019 was a new testimony of the traditional friendship that unites our two countries and the enormous potential for bilateral cooperation," the Spanish Sovereign said in a speech at the reception of members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Madrid, including His Majesty the King's ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich.
King Felipe VI also presented the broad outlines of the foreign policy of the new coalition government, which aims to promote a "modern", "democratic" and "united" Spain, with an open economy and a tolerant society, noting that the Maghreb region is an essential dimension of Spain’s foreign action because of its proximity and shared interests.
In addition, the Spanish sovereign reiterated the willingness of his country to promote its cooperation relations with several countries in the Maghreb region and to strengthen its presence in Asian markets, expressing Spain’s commitment to international peace and security and to Africa as the "continent of the future".
In the field of migration, King Felipe VI stressed the need to implement a "genuine European migration and asylum policy", combining dialogue and collaboration with migrants' countries of origin and transit, and to strengthen "development cooperation" and the fight against mafias.
Spain, King Felipe VI added, will give priority to "preventive diplomacy, mediation and humanitarian diplomacy", noting that human rights are the determining factor in the foreign action of the current legislature.
King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia had paid a State visit to Morocco on 13-14 February 2019 at the invitation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This visit gave a boost to the dynamics of the close and multidimensional relations between the two neighboring countries.
