Closing of the 6th session of the Morocco-Oman Joint Commission held on July 4, 2023 in Rabat, co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al-Busaidi.

At a joint press conference at the closing of this session, Mr. Bourita stressed that the Kingdom of Morocco and the Sultanate of Oman are determined to open up new prospects for cooperation and partnership.

He said that the two countries agreed on the importance of opening up new areas of cooperation, including renewable energy and the green and digital economy, in addition to consolidating joint efforts in investment, economic and trade-related aspects in order to raise them to the expected level.

The Minister also stressed that this meeting provided an opportunity to review the fruitful cooperation relations between the two countries and discuss ways to raise them to higher levels, in line with the aspirations of the two Sovereigns, HM King Mohammed VI and HM Sultan Haitham Ben Tarek.

The meeting also served to strengthen and enrich the legal framework of bilateral relations through the signing of several memoranda of understanding in the fields of diplomatic academy, maritime and rail transport and ports, he said, adding that other texts on judicial and commercial cooperation, youth, culture and Habous and Islamic affairs are being prepared for signing in the next stage.

Mr. Bourita also said that his talks with his Omani counterpart focused on strengthening the strategic partnership relations between Morocco and the GCC, in view of the fact that the sisterly Sultanate of Oman holds the presidency of the current GCC session, expressing his conviction that this country, known for its outstanding role in consolidating the foundations of peace and stability in the region, thanks to the wise leadership of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, will contribute to enriching the work of this Council and strengthening the privileged partnership relations with Morocco.

Mr. Bourita also welcomed the position of the Sultanate of Oman in support of the Moroccan Sahara and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom. "I take this opportunity to highly appreciate the position of the brotherly Sultanate of Oman in support of the Moroccan Sahara and the territorial integrity of Morocco," he said.

"His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Moroccan people and all the Kingdom's forces highly appreciate the position of the Sultanate of Oman in support of the Moroccan character of the Sahara," the Minister continued, noting that this position is not foreign to the sisterly Sultanate of Oman, which participated with a high-level delegation in the glorious Green March in 1975, when the Omani flag was raised alongside the Moroccan flag during this historic epic.

Morocco expresses its support and solidarity with the Palestinian people during this "delicate and critical phase," while reiterating its appeal to the international community and world powers to intervene to put an end to the aggression suffered by this people and its territory, said Mr. Bourita.

He added that the Kingdom of Morocco reiterates its condemnation and rejection of the multiple Israeli aggressions against Jenin and the death and destruction they have caused.

Mr. Bourita noted that these attacks on the Palestinian territories do not contribute to creating an environment conducive to dialogue and peace in the region.

The Kingdom considers the current situation to be very critical, threatening any remaining hope for peace in the Middle East and fanning the flames of extremism and violence in the region, he continued.

Emphasizing the centrality of the Palestinian cause, Mr. Bourita affirmed that there will be no peace in the Middle East without a just and final settlement of this issue.

He recalled the international consensus on a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue, with the state of Israel and the independent state of Palestine within the June 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as capital of Palestine.

For his part, the Omani Foreign Minister, Mr. Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, said that the positions of Morocco and his country converge on a number of issues of Arab and global importance.

Mr. Al Busaidi said that the meeting allowed the two sides to discuss a number of issues and current affairs specific to Arab countries and other parts of the world, stressing the similarity between the two sides in diagnosing, understanding and dealing with these issues, as well as deepening cooperation and working together to find appropriate solutions to current challenges.

"We are working together with all the means at our disposal to bring viewpoints closer together and to anchor the common values we believe in, respecting the territorial integrity of countries as well as their sovereignty, with international law and its principles as a reference," the Omani Minister added.

In this regard, the Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman warmly thanked the Kingdom, a country with a rich history and an authentic civilization, for its efforts in this field, wishing it stability, security and prosperity.

With regard to the Moroccan Sahara, Mr. Bin Hamoud Al Busaidi expressed his hope that a comprehensive, just and peaceful solution would be found to this dispute through the Moroccan autonomy plan.

In addition, he stressed the deep ties between the Omani and Moroccan peoples, pointing out that the two countries maintain strong relations despite the geographical distance that separates them.

In this context, the Omani minister pointed out that there are many opportunities for Moroccan-Omani partnerships, particularly in the economic field, scientific research, technology, digital transition, green economy, renewable energy and the fight against climate change.

In addition, the Omani Foreign Minister expressed his belief in the investment potential of the private sector in both countries, particularly at the level of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The Omani Foreign Minister also stressed that the Middle East region cannot enjoy lasting stability and development without a peaceful, just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue.

He also drew the attention of the international community and influential states to the importance of respecting international law in order to restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
