Visioconference between Mr. Minister Nasser Bourita and his Maltese counterpart, Dr. Ian Borg (18th of December 2024)

1. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, had a visioconference with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Dr. Ian Borg, on 18 December 2024 on the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

 

2. The two Ministers praised the excellence of relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Malta and reiterated their common will to strengthen them further in all areas. In this respect, both parties underlined the importance of holding the 2nd session of the Morocco-Maltese Joint Commission in Valletta. 

 

3. The two Ministers agreed to pursue the dialogue for the establishment of a Morocco-EU Strategic Partnership on sound and solid grounds. In this respect, Malta reiterates its commitment to contribute to the preservation and strengthening of this Morocco-EU Strategic Partnership at all levels.

 

4. With regard to the Sahara issue, the Maltese Minister reiterated Malta’s long-standing support for the UN-led process for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution for the parties.

 

 Both Ministers agreed on the exclusivity of the UN in the political process and reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council Resolutions 2602, 2654 and 2756, which noted the role and responsibility of the parties in the search for a realistic, practicable, enduring and mutually acceptable political solution.

 

 Malta considers the autonomy plan presented in 2007 as a serious and credible contribution to the political process led by the UN to move the process forward towards a definitive resolution and as a good basis for a solution agreed by the parties. Malta encourages all parties demonstrate further political will towards a definitive solution and recommitting to UN efforts in a spirit of realism and compromise with the aims and principles set out in the UN Charter.

 

5. The two Ministers reaffirmed the importance of pursuing the same dynamic at multilateral level and welcomed their coordination on issues of common interest within international bodies,
