Joint statement : Mr. Nasser Bourita receives his Malawian counterpart

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Malawi, Ms. Nancy Tembo, proceeded on December, 18, 2023 in Rabat, to the signing of a joint statement between the Kingdom of Morocco and the the Republic of Malawi.

In a joint statement adopted following this bilateral talk, the two ministers pointed out that the first session of the Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC) between Morocco and Malawi will be held during the first quarter of 2024.

On this occasion, both parties reaffirmed the importance of the JCC as an essential mechanism to strengthen collaboration between the two countries, emphasizing the need to hold it regularly, as stated in the joint communiqué.

The agenda for this first session of the Joint Commission will cover various sectors, including agriculture, food security, mining, water and sanitation, energy, transportation, infrastructure development, land planning, housing and urban development, higher education and scientific research, as well as tourism and cultural and religious programs.

In this context, the two ministers highlighted the significant economic potential of both countries, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to developing a mutually beneficial economic partnership and raising bilateral exchanges to a satisfactory level.

They agreed to create a more favorable environment for mutual investments and encourage business communities in both countries to fully explore and take advantage of the opportunities offered by their expanding markets and infrastructures.

During this meeting, which reviewed the overall bilateral relations in various sectors, the two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the sustained pace of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation and the signing of the cooperation roadmap for the period 2022-2024.

This roadmap reflects the ambition of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Malawi to consolidate their bilateral relations based on mutual respect, a strong partnership, and active solidarity, especially in the areas of education and training, technical cooperation, agriculture, trade and investment, security, economic promotion and investment, as well as the exchange of official visits.

Mr. Nasser Bourita and Ms. Nancy Tembo praised the quality of the bonds of esteem and respect characterizing the relations between HM King Mohammed VI and HE Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, highlighting the deep ties of friendship, mutual solidarity, and cooperation uniting the two countries, as well as their commitment to work together to elevate bilateral relations to a higher level.

The two ministers also welcomed the consistency, continuous promotion, and expansion of the range of friendship and cooperation between Morocco and Malawi, as evidenced by the opening of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Lilongwe, as well as the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Rabat and the Consulate General of this country in Laayoune. 

On the Sahara Issue, Ms. Nancy Tembo, reaffirmed her country's support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.

This position was expressed in a joint statement issued following a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Malawian counterpart.

Lilongwe supports the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and backs the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for achieving a political, realistic, practical and lasting solution to the to the Sahara dispute.

Malawi also reaffirms its constant support for the Autonomy Initiative, presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, as the one and only credible and realistic solution to solve this dispute.

On an official visit to Morocco on December 17-21 to inaugurate her country's Embassy in Rabat and to operationalize its General Consulate in Laayoune, Malawi top diplomat announced that she would be visiting the southern provinces, an opportunity to witness the economic and social boom as well as the political and democratic dynamics underway in the region.

The visit will also be an opportunity to explore the progress made in implementing the New Development Model for the Southern Provinces, launched in 2015 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
